The historic Queen Wilhelmina Lodge, now part of the State Park, originally opened in 1898 as a resort for executives of the Kansas City Southern Railroad, owned by the Dutch Railroad.  This was the same year that Wilhelmina was crowned queen, and thus the lodge was named and dedicated in her honor.

Queen Wilhelmina owned and rode horses all her life.  It was a favorite pastime of her royal highness and husband, Prince Hendrik.  We choose here to immortalize the queen as a young woman in the year of her crowning, doing what she loved best.

This sculpture is the beginning of a dream for the art community of the Mena Valley.
With a desire to bring art into the lives of those who may never have the opportunity
to experience it, the hope is that this group will be able to acquire funding to erect a
1 1/4 life size monument on the site of the Queen Wilhelmina Lodge, in the Queen Wilhelmina State Park.  Being a breeder of Egyptian Arabian Horses, artist Barbara Lewis has placed the Queen on the back of an Arabian, bringing attention to the breed, as well.    Below is how that monument might look, in part, in either of two proposed locations, when erected.  If you would like to donate to this effort, you may contact the Mena Art Gallery for further information.

This is to the left of the main entrance.

Here it would be viewed as one approaches the lodge.
